Dedicated to the memory of Steve Carne

In memory of Steve, we are raising money for the charity, Guts UK, with the hope that from this unbearable loss, we can make a positive change - to increase the levels of research into diseases of the gut, liver and pancreas so pancreatitis can be better understood and those who suffer, given a better chance of surviving.

One in ten attacks of pancreatitis can be attributed to rare causes, including genetic conditions that lead to excessive fat levels in the bloodstream (known as hypertriglyceridemia). Steve was that 1 in 10 and lived for 14 years never finding a solution for the high levels of triglycerides in his body.

Steve passed away on 15 March 2020, one month short of his 55th birthday, having fought a long battle against acute pancreatitis. We knew nothing of this cruel illness before Steve was struck down. It’s complex, causes agonising pain and indignity, yet there was no surgical intervention, which could help Steve in his fight. Bedridden for 3 months, he bore it all with calm and humour, never losing his warm and generous nature, looking outward from his suffering to show concern and compassion for those around him. It was heartbreaking to watch; to desperately try and make sense of the confusing messages from his frail body; to see Steve make slow progress and begin talking of returning home, only to hear of yet another complication and setback. In the final days, Steve developed an aggressive infection in his abdomen, caused by dead pancreatic tissue and he was simply too weak to beat it.

Dave has lost a beloved husband, John and Wendy their treasured firstborn son. Steve was a loving brother and uncle and we are all broken hearted that his life was cut short by such a cruel illness.

Huge thanks to all who have visited Steve’s page to offer support and comfort and keep his memory alive. No more pain. No more suffering. Rest peacefully, wrapped in our love.
